Batumi – June 8, 2016

Member States in the pan-European region have agreed to green their economies by implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: in this framework Cycling provides an integrated solution that has a positive impact on Health and Environment while enhancing economic progress and creating Green Jobs. For that reason CONEBI has been invited by the United Nations and the World Health Organization to the event “Riding towards the Green Economy: Cycling and Green Jobs”, which took place during the Eight Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference in Batumi – Georgia – on the 8th of June 2016.
After sharing with the other panelists and audience the main figures about the EU Bicycle Industry, CONEBI stressed the importance of investing in cycling infrastructures in order to sustain both the Cycling Culture in Europe and the wide range of jobs deriving from that.
During the event Mr Jan Dusik – Director of the Regional Office for Europe of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) – launched the study “cycling and green jobs: key findings of the forthcoming joint report by UNEP, WHO and UNECE”. The outcome of the study is noteworthy as the total estimated cycling-related jobs that could be created would increase to 435,000 if 56 European major cities had the same cycling modal share as Copenhagen.
